PPP2 - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - The Kingfisher Band Poster/Menu

Band Poster/Menu

Over the holidays around Christmas time the pub the kingfisher is having a range of different tribute  acts preforming, for these a set menu and set of posters needs to be designed. The posters need to fit with the rest of the christmas branding of the pub but also needs to be seen as a separate events for the tribute act, the poster need appeal to the target market if the pub which is families, but also target more specialised audeince of the nights themselves. The nights target an older female audience, last year most of the people who came to the events where walking group, band groups and friendship groups of older women due to the time being 3-5 other audeince will be still in work.

TARGET AUDEINCE - OLDER WOMEN (50-70)
DEADLINE - AUGUST 1st
SIZE - A2

keep with current branding style but advertise the events as individual nights

basically the same design but with different day/information.colour scheme

idea, what is wanted via the client
4 different posters for the nights heavily photographical based of the promotional work of the bands, the same basic design of the posters to make it clean they are all part of the same event but are different nights with the different act but to keep them with a house style to reflect they have the same menu. basic brand for the event but with then nights signifying their difference via the imagery/text/logo of the brand.

(help)
HOW CAN THESE STYLES BE MIXED??
HOW CAN THIS STYLE FO DESIGN BY MODERNISED?
THESE POSTERS ARE TERRIBLE

ISSUE -for the posters for the events the client has contacted the tribute acts for promotional images that can be used, these images have been seen over but are very very bad quailty or content therefore uses the below images will make the nights look cheap/trashy where as the client wants them branded as fun, girl night out style events rather than old dated events. Therefore the current style of poster cannot be used as the images portray a style the client doesn't want used to represent the brand. After receiving the imagery the client decide they didn't want it included therefore it couldn't used in the posters. CANNOT USE IMAGERY

research into imageless events

for research to inspire the new design that would have to be text heavy, research was conducted into how to create/design a poster for a band using just type, this was the research i collected for the brief but once shown to the client it was clear they had very different ideas for this brief. They wanted posters that clearly reflect the branding of the pubs christmas events more than a band posters, COMMUNICATION IS KEY. Therefore these posters are not relevant but they have allowed me to find more posters designs/style i'm interested in, which can be studied more for part of influences/style inspiration.

IDEA - instead of creating 4 different posters for the nights since now there is no imagery that can be used instead create a festival style poster that will include the dates/times/needed information all in one poster form. This will help the events be branded as part of a group but whilst being designed will need to keep in mind that the client wants them to be seen as separate night. the nights are separate bands but part of an over all event that will have the same menu.

festival poster research
overall for this brief now the client wants a festival poster for the events that shows all the dates/time/name of the bands but is designed around their current christmas branding ideas. It needs to be a festival poster for their events/tribute acts, include the information sent but in the style of the branding. BASICALLY NO CREATIVE INFLUENCE.

information given
after 5 different emails the information needed on the poster was final received, it was sent in a large amount of different emails instead of one simple information like the briefs we are set at uni are, this proved harder to collect all the data to put in the one poster but this may happen in future work. It takes patiences to receive all the data, and this a downfall of creating for a company that has never used a graphic designer before.  HARD TO GET NEEDED INFORMATION

FINAL POSTERS

overall review of this task
WORKING WITH A CLIENT IS VERY VERY HARD
After completing this task for the client its been made clear that this has many draw backs that might make creating the rest of the work for these briefs as the client has never worked with a graphic designer before or has any idea of how graphic design works. The client wants me to create work that has no artistic influence really but fits with a style they already have in mind even if the final outcome isn't as effective due to this, they want to me to create a poster for them but basically only use my photoshop/digital styles and take advantange of the software i have paid for without paying me. The software used here has already been purchased for uni work but if this was only job i wouldn't be able to afford this software just for this brief unless i was getting paid for this project but the client doesn't understand this.Working for client with no understand of graphic design practise or ideas on how this work is done means they don't understand the need information for the posters here and an excessive amount of emailing/communication was done with the client to get the needed data. This brief has highlight how.
BEING USED FOR MY PHOTOSHOP SKILLS OVER GRAPHIC DESIGN EXPERINCE/IDEAS

MENU DESIGN
as the client was so demanding with the design for the poster and how they wanted it too look for the menu design it was simply created to match the existing design for the christmas menus except with the needed content.  Doing this made it easier to produce as it took no time or mental effort and as i'm not getting paid this felt the most suitable as the client is very against me influencing the design. So the design was mocked up as the same as the current work.

This brief has opened my eyes to what general clients might want, they want a design that just expresses their style rather than a conceptual piece. Hopefully after talks with the client for the design of the other posters that need to be i will have more creative control over the design element which will make the final outcome more effective. For the next brief i will re-write what is given then create a few ideas of my own concepts then get feedback on the most popular via target audeince research as well as just the view of the client so i can express the audience views as well as just hers.

PAID
after being told i wouldn't get paid for this project it turned out the head office of the company paid me via vouchers for the pub, this was a pleasant surprise as it allowed me to take out a friend to the pub and get free food/drinks. Even thought this was nice this is not suitable way to fund any other work or future projects as the vouchers could only be used for food/drink in that pub but i will need to work to afford to live, this means that costs/wage will need to be discussed with the client before.

PPP2 - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - The Kingfisher Band Night Posters

Over the summer after finishing uni for the end of the year i work in pub near where i live in Saddleworth called the Kingfisher, over christmas/new year they are running a large amount of events, bands and new food menus. As i do graphic design they have asked me to design/create the posters for this events, this is for replacement for the usual cheaply design adverts created on Microsoft word. The aim for the advert is to communicate to their target market the offers/event they have on at christmas, the poster need to appeal to children as well as their parents as the events will be mostly based around families due to the pub being a 2 for 1, family style, children friendly atmosphere. The design of the posters need to fit with the style of their branding, current menus, and style for over the season.

disadvantages
-might not get paid
-client doesn't understand graphic design as a 'real' job
-client has very specific idea of what they want created
-little artistic freedom

advantages
-might get paid
-experience of working with a real life client
-experince of having to work for a real brief
-get get pay rise
-create posters for portfolio work
-get name out there?
-can keep the professional print for my portfolio after use

current branding
pub name- kingfisher
brand-marstons

facebook page
Menu

past years new years advert

current advertising style -

current menu -

Overall due to the lack of budget for a designer for the branch their promotional work is very basic, follows no rule or has any concept behind it therefore creates terrible posters that will basically inform on a obvious level but will not encourage any future custom. The aim for this brief is to make the specialised offer or events for the pub representative of the rest of the branding and promotional work whilst also appeal to their target market. The adverts will need to follow the professional style of the menu ect created but be fore the smaller events, constant contact with the christmas director of the pub will allow feedback and ideas for the projects.

posters wanted -
new years
festival menu
festival band lists
breakfast with santa
night before christmas

Overall as this for a company i already work for over the holidays, i have very personal relationship with the boss and the manager, i have agreed to produce the poster as i feel its chance to do some outside uni work that could be maybe be included in my portfolio. Also, the manager might be/will annoyed if i don't complete the task, but i will as to be paid/reinversed for the time spend doing the work.
