PPP3 - Collab Client Visit

Collab Client Visit

For extended practise i'm completing a collaboration brief, based around the re-design and advertising of Mean-wood Farm. The farm is in Leeds, and as part of research the collab partner and myself visited the farm. This was vital to success of identifying the problem and the issue the brief aims to solve, as visit the farm physically show the lack of overall branding and consistence. It also showed that the map do not work as they are outdated, and the lack of information available about the animals.

This visit showed the importance of visiting a client before starting the design work. As well as showed how when collaborating it's important for both members of a team to take an active part in the research as they understand the funder-mental project aims in more depth due to this. As a team we learnt largely more for this visit together which ca positive impact the outcome than if we went at different times or just one member went.

PPP3 - Butter Crumble Design Surgery

ButterCrumble Design Surgery

As part of PPP, this year I've created a creative Instagram account, which I've used to keep updated on the art industry and any art events in Leeds. One of the event/meeting i've seen via this is the buttercrumble design surgery.

After seeing this i emailed the studio

I then called the number and book a slot for the 13th of March at 3:30.

PPP3 - Networking Workshop

Networking Event

On Thursday I have a networking event, Ladies Wine, and Design, after going to an event like this last year and finding it very hard to talk to professionals. I felt really awkward at these events but as it's important for my future to meet new connections at events like these I attended a workshop on how to do this more professionally for Thursday.

photos -

things to think about for wine and designs -
-go with friends but do not stay with them
-if you need to leave a conversation say you're going to the loo or for a drink
-LISTEN TO PEOPLE
-do not hijack conversations
-make sure you ask questions
-make sure you're nice
-dress more on the formal side

PPP3- Little Ad Agency Leeds Meeting

 Little Ad Agency Leeds Meeting

ADVICE-
take as many placements as possible
it ok not to know what to do
loved the sharpies
likes the website work
show people commission work, even if you don't like it
logo for fine art is good
keep it simple
explain work more
try as much stuff as a student as possible

WORK PLACEMENT
This is the agency I really want to get a work placement for, this is due to research into their style/work and how it matched my personal style more. I felt I'd learn how to develop more here than at the other studio, and that also I could give more to this studio that others.

After the feedback for the other studios on how to present my work, what to show and what to talk about I've managed to get offered a placement here. YAY

when?
either over easter, or one day a week for a few weeks. my intention is to ask to do it in may after I finish my extended practice work, but I'll see what the company want me to do.

PORTFOLIO FEEDBACK
-include more client work, even if i don't like it as shows done work outside uni
-have a client page on website to show work done and paid for
-durex is a strong brief
-keep it very visual
-dont need to focus
-include book covers

PPP3- Little Ad Agency Leeds

Little Ad Agency Leeds

This is my 3rd meeting with a studio, after the last 2 there a few changes that need to be made to my portfolio, and also a bit more research I need to go into the company. This is the first ad agency, but overall the one place I really want so I need to make sure I present myself in a professional manner.

-learn where before, check the google address
-ad some website to my portfolio, ad a page of just the headers to see the type
-remove the text from my portfolio
-make sure there no split words
-ad some logos to my portfolio
-ad mock-up/make them more realistic
-finish website

new pages -

-checked the address with Chris

research -

This brand is largely more my style of work, brightly colored typography and illustration images. Also, this is an ad agency, and I really want to try more ad work and this would be a great chance to see what it's like working for a brand.

PPP3- Behance Messages

Behance Messages

In 1st year Made By Alphabet cam into to talk to us a group, they explains they got a lot of their jobs via Behance. Since them i've kept a Behance and edits it with my work thought the years, making it a lot for focused this year. This was done before i had made my website, and was used to show my online work but the other day i received a message over the site asking about a collaboration brief.

 http://musicgeeks.co.uk/

I'm unsure if anything will come from this but i'd be interested in taking part in the project is it's available.

PPP3- Meeting with ThisCreative

Meeting with ThisCreative

As part of PPP this year my aim to get a work placement, to do this I aim to get as much advice as possible from working professionals. I emailed out a range of different studio in Manchester, asking for advice and ThisCreative replied. I meet with Ben, the founder of the office in Manchester.

FEEDBACK ON PORTFOLIO
-need more graphic design
-needs more work
-remove the text
-make it more visual
-MOCK UP ARE VITAL
-remove book covers without a mockup
-PUT IN BRANDING/LOGO WORK
-PUT IN WEBSITE

FEEDBACK OVERALL
-work looks good
-confidence is good
-talk about work well
-fluent conversation
-my work is good, and it's good to not specialize in one aspect of graphic design
-try to do everything for a brand. their logo their copy their type
-LOVE THE PENS, need to send these over
-IT'S HARD, life after uni but it gets better
-try to push ideas, try to do everything for the brands

A big aspect Ben stressed the importance of the work you sen over to brands and how this looks, it needs to be designed well so they think you can design. ThisCreative ignores any CV or work when it doesn't look good, this should be considered in the future.

PLACEMENTS-
After talking to Ben he seemed very happy to register placemen over easter if I had time. They offered me a chance to do this.

Overall the talk was really interesting, to get feedback on a professional view of my work but also how to make it look better, this can be applied to by portfolio for next time.

PPP 3 - Fine Art Logo, Final Logo Evaluation

Final Logo Evaluation

For the fine art submission deadline i sent off a range of different ideas, but this brief will not be part of my extended practise submission. This due to the nature of the reduce concept idea for the logo, as the client didn't want to give a theme or idea for this brief and kept it very open the submission lacked idea. It was very hard to create a good idea for this brief without the needed information or brief, as i didn't know what style or ideas the client had therefor could have produced something unsuitable. The lack of detail in this brief  and lack of client communication meant the outcome might not be what they aim for, and where very hard to consider. This brief showed the need for more a defined brief for the client to be set as well as for more communication between client and designer. The research needs to be sent off for feedback to check the work fits with the client aims before the design process starts. NEED A MORE DEFINED THEME/BRIEF

Also this brief was communicated only socially, over the internet and this mean the client might not have been honest or have said how they felt about idea. If this was done in person more feedback and development with the client could be completed. MORE COMMUNICATION WITH CLIENT, MORE MEETING IN PERSON

The client will get back to be with feedback and if i've been picked in the next few weeks, but i don't have confidence in this idea but will learn for this issues to make sure of the branding for Liv (Photography) and for Jack Wood's Advertising.

PPP - Website Development, Feedback/Changes

After creating and setting my website live, feedback was asked for. This was to help create the most effective engaging site that'll set the best tone for my work. I asked for this of creatives, tutors and also potential employers, to what they were looking for.

FEEDBACK-
spelling mistake on the Motivational Poster Page
make the orchard pig and Yorkshire tea image on the front page have pastel background
set pastel background for all the work for the front page
this is potentially more functional
looks cool
needs a logo/branding
remove the bit about being a student, remember not to be defined by this. You're a freelance graphic designer
the home page really pops with the color scheme
make it match your other sites

CHANGES

background colors need changing to pastels

PPP 3 - Evolution Print Trip

Evolution Print Trip

Currently for some of my extended practise work my idea consist the production of zine,  (for my Art Fund, Plant Life, Liv's Branding and Pocketless). If these idea are selected the final outcome will either need to be professional print or at least a professional proposal created, due to this professional printing need to be considered.

Evolution is a professional print studio based in Sheffield, that often do commercial work and also work for past students for this uni. There is a trip organised to visit this, this can answer some of the questions i have, also exploring the benefits of professional print (what can they do that uni cannot, what do they need for designers, any common mistakes designer make).

This is to learn for this, allow me to experiment with their benefits whilst also highlight any issue they face and designers face as to remove this in my future practise.

TRIP QUESTIONS -
do they print in white ink? (not available in uni)
No, byut they know place this can be done, if i want to do this i can talk to them. They overall know a lot of other printers so if there is something they cannot do, they'll talk to overs and arrange it. They guys where really helpful, and they'll talk about things and help as much with project as they can.

do they print stop colours/fluorescent?
Yes, the same a precession we visited in first yea, this can be done for brands and client to make sure the colour is exact.

is there any way to cheaper and project but keep good quality?
Printing on GSF smith stock for a whole book can be really pricey, but you can minic the same style using cheaper paper but with finishes. Also use like 2 pages/cover in GFSmith and it looks basically the same but can save £1000

what sizing do they suggest?
A or B sizes, they try to fit as many as possible on the plates os they can get a few different print each time to reduce waste and cost.

how many prints do they do?
They advice projects over a 100 copies

what mistakes do designer make?
DO NOT READ THE FILE THEY SEND OVER AFTER PRINT, ALWAYS SEND OVER PDF TO AVIOD COLOUR CHANGE

why print over digital?
the finishes, and quality but it depends on the brief outcome and audience

 TRIP-

can fit different copies on one sheet

files type they use to define setting for each brief

PPP3 - Portfolio Response

Portfolio Response

After emailing out a range of studios by portfolio and my new website, a few have got back to me.

ThisCreative

https://thiscreative.com/projects/food-international

MEETING 11AM,  TUESDAY THE 13TH
-do placements
-give advice
-help with my portfolio

From this feedback, compared to the unresponsive first set of emailed it can be deduced that having my portfolio, own website and professional email address have all helped me appear more professional. This has greatly improved by feedback, and help me achieve the intended goal overall positively benefitting my practice.

PPP3 - Portfolio Send Out

Portfolio Send Out

Dinosaur in Manchester asked for my work to be sent out to them, rather than just a website or social link. To do this I've made a small portfolio sample of my current work, including the brief I'm most proud of and the work I think represent me best. I've kept it small as to just send out the work I've professional photographed and made sure the work is very visual heavy after feedback from Alec.

I've made this mostly for Dinosaur constraints, but as now I have this body of my work professionally displayed my aim is to send this to a range of agencies.  The aim is to get my work out there, get feedback on my work and just generally spark interest in my practice as my other emails where ignored.

In the session today Shannie said that it's ok and even good to send out loads of emails, as it shows companies you really want to work with them. Due to this, it's going to send out my work to the studios I've researched as well as the ones I have already emailed( the ones that ignored me).

SEND OUT ON MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS

-only 2/3 images per page
-only include project I've happy with
-have a good ending and start
-short and sweet
-image heavy
-rule of 3, 3 briefs, 3 pages each

PORTFOLIO

- kept simple
- added hand drew text to show informal tone and to fit with the personal style
- easily readable

-durex used to set the humorous tone
-strong visuals for this brief

-shows social media interest
-links to dissertation
-shows the breadth of work

-shows package design
-shows problem-solving
-shows design ability
-shows I've brief work

-designed like the first page
-ties it all together
-gives contact details
-added a new email address
-shows Behance/other sites
