PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - 504/ Book Evaluation

For this brief the final outcome produced is a publication based around expressing the atmosphere of Leeds Festival, the aim of the book uses print to allow the audience to remise about the shared expensive or to inspire them to visit the festival. The final publication would fall under the categories of a guide, gift or art book, this as it it uses humorous facts, advice and anecdotes about the weekend but low functional use.

Research has effected the final outcome dramatically without the college style of page design inspiration the outcome of the book wouldn’t have been as visually interesting or have had a fitted a gap in the market which is what makes the final book successful. This module focuses on production of the final outcome so many different mocks up where created to test the limitation and benefits of print media before the final publication, this allowed any issues to be fixed before the final book but also proved that print can sometime have unpredicted issues. Because of the mock up the final publication has a reduced amount of faults therefore this development effective the final outcome quality quite heavily in a positive light.

The outcome uses techniques to the benefit print media by taking advantages of fluorescent screen-print ink, different textures to reflect the festival experience not only visually but via touch (the book cover and string) and different stock choice to portray disposable photography. The major issue with the final publication is the alignment of the pages, the book had to be drilled for the binding method but this was difficult due to the thickness publication so the pages as the moved slightly during the process consequently are slightly disjointed.

Glitter has been added to the final book, this is cover up glue mistakes on the cover due to the nature book cloth texture but the final effect of the glitter has actually enhance the final book as it’d give it a feature not seen by any other books making it stand out whilst also adding ascetically to the cover, in comparison to the content pages the cover was slightly dull before this feature. The book has aspects that allow it to be commercial printed, the colour scheme have been give a Pantone Colour code to allow it to be reproduced in the same accurate colour whilst the main content page can also be printed but the feature pages and the binding will need to be done by hand increasing overall the final production cost therefore effecting the price point too.

At the start of this project it was discussed if the content show be changed and started again but after seeing the final outcome overall I’m glad this didn’t happen. This is as at the start the imagery felt hard to sell commercially as a book but research developed to inform other book of this style that do this and how the do this, then this inspired the final idea which when created into the final publication is a unique style of book that uses the production techniques as a link to the concept.
