PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Zine Hand Type Added

The whole concept of the zine is to make a publication that celebrates both manual and digital design styles in typography, due to this the design style of the zine it's self should aim to reflect the content/concept.

The zine should aim to be a mixture of digital and manual type but the current layout and editorial style of the zine is completely digital produced and the aesthetics express this, there need to be a manual aspect added to reflect the overarching theme as well as to fit with the imagery content/style of the work included. This was going to be done as the header for each artist name and spread but was not included due to legibility.  An issues with hand-created type is it's clarity, therefore it has not been used for the names or the quotes as main body as it would obstruct the readability of the text which its vital for the purpose of the zine.

In a email received today one o the contributing artists asked for their website/contact info/instagram link to be added to the publication as a form of promotion of themselves, this could be a good way to add this detail as well as to promote their artist social pages in the zine. Many of the artist in the zine have different page name or studio names on their social sites therefore having a like to their 'stage names' could make sure they receive the correct credit for the work whilst also allowing the audience to explore more of their work or contact their for future jobs ect.

The common social site all the artist have in common is the use of instagram, this is how their details for this project where collected for the zine project, most of their pages also have link to their email or to other details/means of communication therefore is a good platform to promote.

As this need information for each artists needs to be included and as the design of the zine need to reflect more manual decorative type, these titles will be added in this style. This also will link to the more social, playful fun nature of the site.

Scans -
most of the quote explored how the artist create type manually first then edit/scan/go over it digitally so it can be printed therefore this the method followed for the type design process for this aspect

digital type experiments -

more 'manly' type style experimented with, see too child like, too immature for the audience of the publication

drawn directly on the indesign document - too thick type, not legible,
digital manual typeface experiment, loses the individuality, seem to formal, don't fit with the quotes

created on illustrator then pulled in

After working on a different style and how to create the intended style,  the medium that seemed to work best was creating the text on illustrator drawn over the scanned in sketches. This gave the clear lines and the clarity need for editorial copy but with the personal touch as the text is still drawn. This style will be added to all of the pages with the relevant information, this will be added to the area of the pages where visually the pages needs balance.

final page spreads with type-

feedback-
fluid, fit with the style
work with the content to voice personality which is nesscessary as featuring all the other artists, the design voice need to be seen against the rest of the other work
reflect the handmade manual design feel
sets a house style of the pages
balanced out the Helvetic
adds personality to the book

Due to positive feedback this design style will be added to the final layout and book for the print.
