PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - What Women Want

What Women Want

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFwHs7fEUNs

In 2000 a film was created that has a strong female role where the main character is a creative director, the idea was to reflect how women are portrayed in the advertising industry along with the main story line of a man being able to understand a woman by hearing their thoughts. Even though the main line in this cheesy romantic comedy is terrible with a sleazy man who final flaws for a powerful women who he in tail was sacred off/hated, his main was to use his 'power' of being able to hear her thought today everything before she could and steal her job.
This films strongly highlights how in the advertising and high up in creative business at the time women where started to become more important and how the men reacted to this, they felt de-masculinized by the amen coming in and taking over their jobs. Women had to prove thyself constantly to fight against this oppression, they needed to show they weren't just as good but better to seem equal. Advertising has always been a male driven industry and this film to me highlighted even more how this will effect my future, will i even have a chance to be taken seriously? will i ever even get a job or will i be discriminated against due to my gender? how can i fight this?
i watched this film to get an idea of how women work int he industry and it highlighted t me exactly what kind of job i want, i want to do what the main character does, the ideas part but with less discrimination. It was a useful film to watch as it open my eyes to how the industry work and gave me a goal to aim for even if it did highlight issues i may face in the future. I need to stick to what a believe, know the facts demand attention and make sure my ideas are heard to help me get to this.

LARGE FOCUS ON HER ATTRACTIVE LEVEL
HAS TO BE BETTER TO SEEN AS EQUAL
DISMISSED AT FIRST
SEEN AS A BITCHY WOMEN BECAUSE SHE DEMANDING
HARDER FOR HER
WOMEN ARE A MASSIVE PART OF THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY THAT ARE IGNORED / NOT LISTENED TO

goal - be a creative director at ad company

related articles i read on the subject, as the film is 15 yard old i did some more research to see if this is still happening.

http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/candid-conversation-5-women-leaders-advertising-and-media-156576

In this article related to the subject its states that, there is not only physical proof that women are still undermined in the business but stats and figure that agree with this idea. They gathered a group of professional women in the industry and asked them to explain why/ how and what they feel contribute to this, how we can change it and how (if) it will improve in the future.
-3 percent of executive creative directors at ad agencies are female
'there remains a dearth of women running ad agencies, agency holding companies and digital companies'

goal - be the next Sarah Hofstetter

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Poster Style

Eye Magazine Style Poster Design

After seeing the cover of eye magazine i have used Pinterest to find different poster/type that links to this style of work, other ways this can be use for brief but keeping the same minimalist simple type, making the type the bold focus but mess around with the layout and imagery. Combining guided layout with post modern ideas of imagery or print, this appeals to me massively as this contains all the things i look about Digital type but applies a different more interesting twist to it. Messed around with different styles to create a style in its self that follows only some of the graphic design rules.

COMBINED DIGIAL FLAT DESIGN WITH IMAGERY/DECORTIVE TECHQNIUES
takes a simple type then plays around with layout ect to make this design aspect
bold and easily readable yet fun/engaged due to the uncommon style

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - York Menu

Menu found in bar in York

A Bar called Evil Eye in York used a very cleve method to sell/display its drink menu, i found this on a visit to York and felt it was an amazingly smart piece of advertising as it directly targets it audience but also increases its sales but making it fun/part of game to drink more at the bar. The drinks menu was a book full of drinking games where selected drinks where the prizes.

Each of the games has drinks as the solution which causes the audience to purchase more drinks when they win, its s funny twist on the normal drinks menu that targets students. Students often play drinking games to get drunk faster (i know this as a student) this bar takes advantage of this by giving them 2 games to play. It uses current trends in drinking games to increase their sales, but this is only successful due to the professional yet informal design of the menu, its colourful colour scheme reflect that of a board game whist seeming positive and happy. The font used is serious but this is contradicted by the use of funny illustrations that relate again back to childhood board games, this constant reflection on the childhood boardgames shows how simple/young the bar is, it wants to reflect back in a way to time a more simple by creating a easy game anyone can play.

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - York Trip

Visit to York

Yesterday i visited york for a day, this was the architecture here has been compared to the most historically in any city of the UK. This was to build on my love for the gothic cathedral in paris and the over street style is similar in York therefore i thought this city would inspire me the same.
York sticks to the old fashion building, cobbled streets, and wooden architecture but combines this with modern styles to make it a suitable showcase for the more upper class shops. The vintage architecture and swashed layout of the street causes a busy active area that seems to be full of unique hand made craft shops or more highstreet quirky design store. The city keeps it original beauty but add modern feature to make it seem more relevent but this reflects my style of work clearly.

After this visit i am convinced that i can create a style of graphic design that has historically aspects combined with newer more modern more digital styles, this city shows how both can work together in a busy way to create design thats beautifully imperfect. York is quirky, slightly odd, slightly imperfect, busy, historic but is still relevant as a popular tourist destination and one of the countries business tourist towns .

INSPIRATION

In this lecture we learnt how to 'go deeper' and be inspire by everything around us, how graphic design work is and can be influenced  by things in everyday life that we don't even really notice anymore. From conversations about what people find offensive to religious views, all these influence the work we do by showing us what not to include and whats appropriate for our practise. We need to keep up to date with current styles, ideas and trends to make our practise relevant, we do this daily all the time by even walking around seeing the clothes people wear, type used on menus and signs, graphics is everywhere and we are influenced by everything we just don't always consciously notice it. I feel on of my main influences is album cover, i feel this is because you can what style of music the album is before you even listen due to all the aspect the designer has thought about, colour, type, theme and concept all shows a certain mood reflects the genre of music. a main influxes for all graphics designer as well i feel is adverts, these show what is currently working and how companies want to reflects themselves, the provoke emissions in there audiences in which ever way the intent and to se how this is done gives us a greater knowledge of the practice. Instagram and other social networks allow us to follow and see constant new work created by artist, its the different styles all over the world and different ideas at a click of a button or our smart phones we can constantly immersed into art. Overall it gives us a great knowledge of what inspire us and other artists, along with they practises and way it can relate to our work.

PPP - STDUIO BRIEF 1 - Illustrator Work

One of my aims on this course and an area i feel i need to improve is how i can't use illustrator/indesign, this will effect my personal practise as well as professional as it means i can't use industry based software. These are the program used in every day life in the professional work and are created for my subject field, for this brief i have decided to try and force myself to use these systems. After talking to all my friends/peers on the course who use the software the overall feel about how to improve my knowledge with these application is to use them with their help and also via you tube videos or a self help book. I have ordered a book relating the these programs that will help me learn the basic of the software but for now for this brief i will have to just watch youtube videos.

aim - create smooth lines using a wacome tablet using illustrator for studio practice brief 1
what i need to draw -

make these into vector using photoshop

research -

first i tried to create the shapes using the pen tool on illustrator but found out quickly this is just like the pen tool on photoshop,  therefore i was aware of how to use it and what it crete but this was not fit for this brief as it create shapes rather than lines, its very hard to get a equal thickness line using this technique.

paintbrush tool

After the pen tool was not suitable for my aims of creating typography based vectors i had to google how to use a wacome tablet on illustrator instead which came up with the ideas of using the pen tool, this will allow me to draw directly on to the art board like with a paintbrush. I thought this would be the same as it in photoshop where it create disjointed, accurate lines that reflect exactly the hand movement of the pen but this creates uneven, wavey not smooth lines which i need for this brief.

smooth lines on illustrator
videos i watched-
not very useful as it on a different version to illustrator i have

this video taught me how to set up my pen and how to change my brush stoke, how to alter my size, how to change it so it relates to my touch, light touch = thin line, hard touch = thick line
most important part of this video was how it taught me to edit the fidelity of the line, this is exactly what i wanted to know! this allowed me to create lines that where smoother and therefore looked more professional for this brief.

FIDELITY IS EVERYTHING

experiments created on illustrator after learning how to change the fidelity and create smoother lines
