PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Charlotte Interview part 4

This morning i sent off my questions to Charlotte at Iris, amazingly Charlotte has already mannage to reply to me.

response -

When did you release you wants to go in advertising?
It was weird really, I’ve always been artistic… I only ever enjoyed Art in school. But when It was in school the only career related to art that anyone spoke about was becoming an art teacher or just being an artist. Neither appealed to me, so I tried to specialise in subjects like geography and travel & tourism (random) but I just didn’t enjoy it. Then one day, no word of a lie I was watching Friends on TV and it was the episode where Chandler Bing decides to change his career. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtnZUa9UFhg] He decides to go into advertising and I thought it sounded cool, I’d never considered it before. So I researched online and found a university course that offered it (UCA Farnham) and applied! So yeah, it was so random.

(it wasn't a focus but a random thing, she was lost to, least its not just me)

What where your main steps before and after uni to help you get to where you are now?
So after school I decided to go to Sixth form, mainly because my friends did… but I hated it. As said above I didn’t enjoy anything except Art. So after one year of AS Levels I quit and joined Plymouth College of Art to do a National Diploma in Art & design. I loved it, I got the opportunity to do loads of different things; like graphic design, pottery, textiles, web design even glass blowing. It was during my graphic design module I got my first taste of advertising as  we had to create posters. It was so basic back then, but I really liked how I could use my creativity to concept not just create. I loved coming up with ideas and when I realised I could get a job doing that… I was all over it!
So after college as said above I went to UCA farnham where I studied Advertising and Brand Communication. It was a great course (at the time, can’t speak for it now) This is where I met Danny (my partner in crime) and we teamed up and started working as Art Director & Copywriter (I’m the copywriter, Danny is the Art Director) together from second year we started doing placements in agencies In-between studying. So like on easter holidays or in the summer. We even went to New Zealand and worked at Y&R auckland for 4 weeks, which was amazing!
We graduated in 2012 and kept doing more and more placements to build up our agency experience. From small places like Founded (who are actually now a part of iris) to bigger agencies like BBH! Eventually we ended up freelancing for someone we’d met whilst on placement, that freelance job turned into another job and another etc. Then one day a recruiter got in touch with us via Twitter and asked us if we’d consider a role at iris. We went for an interview in early 2013 and the rest, as they say is history!

(I really liked how I could use my creativity to concept not just create. I loved coming up with ideas and when I realised I could get a job doing that, i can relate so so much to this. Start doing placements as much as possible this year and next, over the holidays or whenever i can. Experience is vital, get as much as possible as soon as possible, GET ON TWITTER PROFESSIONALLY)

In the talk you mentioned campaigns you wish you'd thought or have helped with, any campaigns other or projects, beside the Adidas neo recently you've seen you wish you'd help our with or had the idea for?

Stuff I’d wish I’d done:

Non advertising, but still an amazing idea: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/community-fridge-launches-in-brixton-to-cut-food-waste-and-help-those-in-need_uk_589adfd0e4b07685621793db I just love this because its solving a real-world problem.

Advertising idea: Free the kids, for persil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q2WnCkBTw0
This is amazing, and it’s all driven by a really strong insight, that some kids spend less time outside thans.prisoner Now, you may think what’s that got to do with Persil? But Persil’s brand line is “Dirt is good” which is part of an initiative to get kids spending more time outside. Read about it here:  http://www.dirtisgood.com. I just think this is so clever and really shocking and people say content (So advertising that’s view online, youtube, facebook etc) has to either be shocking, funny or relatable. This does shocking extremely well!

(THIS ADVERT IS AMAZING, this is what i love - BETH)

Oldie but a goodie: This for the Guardian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SsccRkLLzU
Absolutely incredible, so simple but really gets their ‘the whole picture’ message across, which they still use. It’s so very clever and won tons of awards.

(DON'T HAVE TO BE COMPLEX TO BE AMAZING AND WIN AWARDS, IT'S ABOUT THE IDEA, GOOD ADVERTS COME FROM GOOD IDEAS)

Stuff I have done & am proud of:

Gamestore: http://www.ohhaicreatives.com/gamestore/ something super fun we did last Christmas. Gamestore (Part of the National Lottery) asked us to help them sell more Scratchcards. Now we realised at Christmas often people would buy them to put in crackers or even as gifts. So we create bespoke Christmas Cards which could be given out for free with a scratchcard purchase, so you could gift it to someone else. We’re hoping to do more of these for other occasions in the year too.

Nectar:http://www.ohhaicreatives.com/#/nectar/ This was Nectars first big brand campaign on TV. We had the job of bringing to life just how many partners nectar has, it’s not just Sainsbury’s! So we created a campaign around the thought that no matter who you are, or what you like, you can get personalised offers from Nectar on what you like.
We did a TV Campaign, as well as social media posts and youtube pre-roll advertising. You can read all about it on our site.

Are there any adverts or advertising project you remember really loving to take part in?
I love working with Camelot on any project, it’s a super fun brand and the work we’ve been doing with them is really exciting.

I also love working on any extra curricular projects. There’s a whole section on Danny and I’s website for personal projects. You can see them all here:

(http://www.ohhaicreatives.com/personal-projects/#/sign-language/ this my favorite of their personal work, love this idea that everyone now understand emojis)

Also you mention twitter being a great way to connect with people, any one you've meet/found on twitter that been a massive influence?
Obviously we got our job through twitter as a recruiter found us on there.

(use twitter more, follow these people )

But there’s tons of super good people to follow:

https://twitter.com/The_Dots_UK – they do a lot of stuff with students, worth following.

Who's been your favorite client or clients to work for/with?
As I said , I love camelot. I also love working on Domino’s here at iris, they’re super playful and their audience is super engaged so, for example.. On the facebook page you can do lots of great things because people just love pizza and want to interact with the stuff we post.

And also, if there any journals or sites you follow daily that give you inspiration?

(follow these)

After studying the interviewing content, reviewing the adverts given, and following the accounts suggested, one quote really stood out to me, "I really liked how I could use my creativity to concept not just create. I loved coming up with ideas and when I realised I could get a job doing that" this is how i feel right now, if there is job where i can come up with ideas that would be amazing. This interview has made me feel that especially over next year i need to focus on advertising as this is probably the area i'd like to go in to, i feel i can relate to the way charlotte feels massively and this interview and the communication i've had which her has really inspired and motivated me. Most of last year and some of this year i've felt really lost, and i'm still not completely sure what i want to do but this interview allowed me to find slightly more direction.

At the end of last year i was confused between typography and advertising, which industry to go into therefor to explore typography more i'd like to explore this areas in more detail as part of the interview as well to see if this give the same motivation, comparison of both will explore both effectively so i can make a informed decision into what i want to do.

Also after the interview i aim to say in-touch with Charlotte to carry on receveing feedback from my project and my idea as i feel as she does this job feedback will e really useful as to where to explore and how to take the idea forward.
