Austin Kleon is a New York Times bestselling author of three books: Steal Like An Artist; Show Your Work!; and Newspaper Blackout. Kleon's works focus on creativity in today's world. He has spoken at organizations such as Pixar, Google, and TEDx
first book talk -
Austin Kleon talks about how every artist steals ideas or inspirations for different artists, ideas grow and have been 'stolen' from different people throughout history and this is what makes work great. He talks about how everyone gets inspiration from everyone else, then how to make this work for everyone as a designer but instead of stopping doing this work because its unoriginal he made a book on it. He steals ideas from everything, he looks at the world as a things worth stealing or things not worth stealing. Everything is up for grabs with this idea, austin then goes on to talk about other artists that work with this concept.
NOTHING COMES FROM NOWHERE, NOTHING IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL.
EVERY NEW IDEA IS JUST A REMIX
Everything created has come from somewhere, it has been created from an influence even if the artist doesn't know this, it might have been something they've seen or something they walk past. We are the sum of our influences. We are collector of ideas, we collect selectively as designer, we surround our lives with things we love and like and this effect our design process. It effect our work because it gives us new idea and new inspiration on different levels.
STEAL ONLY THINGS THAT DIRECTLY SPEAK TO YOUR SOUL.
Create work and steal work that inspires you, saturate yourself with their work and the research back into what inspired them, look back into everything find your greatest artist's greatest influence.
One of the amazing things about this talk is how wide the influences austin takes, he looks from jay z to David bowie to greek speakers.
READ EVERYTHING, COLLECT BOOKS
ALWAYS CARRY PAPER/RECORD EVERYTHING/DOODLE IS ART
imposter syndrome is bad as everyone is faking it, don't feel bad about it, fake it till you make it. If everything is recycled make your recycling better.
As an artist everything is s stage, we don't come out of the womb knowing who we are, we learn who we are by coping. EVERYONE HAS INSPIRATION ITS NOT A BAD THING.
THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO COPY ANYTHING, DO NOTHING.
COPY MANY ARTIST THIS IS RESEARCH
the more people you rip off the more original and amazing your work will be, seem like your heros and steal how they think, how they look at the world. Poets steals, bad poets deface it, good poets make it better.
"The Secret to Creativity Is Knowing How to Hide Your Sources" Albert Einstein.
Inspiring and freeing concept. Not really to "steal", but instead use others' works as a tool to get your own creativity moving along. Turn and play with other people's words and ideas to find and make something new.
