For the final zine there is current 50 pages, along with the cover this means that the stock for the publication will have to be quite thin as to fold. 120 gsm Matt Stock was the first choice as it's thick enough not to leak though on to the corroposnding back page but after folding over as a test the correct amount of pages in the publication felt very thick and obstructed the full open of the document. Therefore the stock will have to be changed to 90 gsm stock as this is the thinnest stock choice available this will have to be used, this is very thin and does mean that the pages will be slightly see though so the back image can be seen but this does add the the 'zine' cheap feel for the document, fitting with the aim of creating a light carry-able booklet .
The cover of the document will be screen printed as to fit with the manual and digital concept, as the pages inside will be printed on white stock the cover stock will be a thicker GSM smith colour stocked. A range of GFSmith stocks have been ordered based around the pastel colour scheme in the zine imagery content, this will all be screen printed onto and the most successful print/colour scheme will be used for the cover of the final zine.
It will be very costly to send out and print copies of the zine to send to the contributors as was the first idea, this is because the final document cannot be screenprinited due to the closing of the screenprint studio over summer which was the initial idea. Therefore these printed cover experiments will be sent out instead as a 'thank you' for their quotes to the contributors instead.

PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Zine Type
The type on the pages inside the zine need to be very readable as this is the main content of the zine, this is as the purpose to communicate the artist's opinion on with method design they personal prefer for typographical design/production therefore the audience need to be able to read the quotes clearly.
The typeface that is chosen for the pages need to compliment the work, the different style as well as not distract for the imagery. As the type/style in all the imagery content is vastly different it'll be hard to find a typeface that works with all the different type, therefore the type thats choice so be simple yet not distracting therefore a san serif typeface would be more suitable.
To add to the hand made nature of the book first hand drawn typeface where experimented with, this was to link to the style of most of the imagery which is hand made or imperfect as well as to link to the concept of the zine.
after this was experimented with it was found that although it complimented some of the typographic work it contrasted come of the other content of the pages as well as not being suitable for body text.
After hand letting was experimented with Vignelli 6 typefaces where experimented with, this is as these are seen as the most suitable typefaces as well as famously readable. As the manual aspect of the design cannot be represented via the body typeface, the digital aspect will be portrayed therefore the focuses will be around using sans serif typefaces more as these are associated more with more Digital design.
![]() |
Helvetica, simple yet to overly simple |
![]() |
use Helvetica, 60 kerning, bold as the header |
![]() |
Bodoni, contrast the bold header text yet adds age to the design due to traditional nature |
![]() |
futura works well as the body as it's legible yet reflect the modern casual digital aspect |
As the page design of the zine now reflects the digital aspect of the publication there will be experiments into ways the manual aspect can be added, how the page design can reflect both the intented concepts equally.
PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Zine Cover/Sketches
Zine Cover
The selected method of production of the zine cover is to screen print the design content, this is with the aim as to reflect the manual aspect of the zines subject area whilst also including links quotes feedback and the professional opinions (link to the way that artists describe manual as physically more appealing/effective).
The aim of the collection of quotes is to inform a target audeince of how to best create typographical content, advice form the artist on their methods and how they prefer to work. This is to help inform my typographical design process at this stage of my degree and learn process, whilst also giving an in-site to the subject area from professionals themselves about how they product work for industry and why they prefer the different mediums. After studying at the responses the common theme is to start the process manually then edit/scan/print digitally the find outcome but to design by hand at first, due to this the cover design aspect of the zine will follow the advice. The cover design process with directly follow the advice given to reflect successful process.
drawn developments - idea taken from feedback into how best to do type -
An issue with hand drawn flourish type styles are they implies feminine tones to the work, as the zine represents professional for both genders therefore aims not to express these bias tones.
manual type reflect manual fluid, free typographical styles
digital type reflect harsh modern bold styles
first mock ups/post card designs -
These first ideas are the development of the postcard that where sent out as part of this brief, the design of them could be brought into the book. Currently none of the post card have had feedback sent but this could improve over the last few days of the brief, (sent out cards to late/time management issue)
TOO FEMININE
After create a first design i'm not happy with the tone, or the feminine aspects of the type therefore this idea will go back to the first drawnings. After reanaylsying type experimental drawning the features needed to be expressed are fluidity (express the different between manual and digital type), originality (contrast overly, use common digital type), legibility (needs to be decrotive and fluid yet readable for the audeince), gender neutral, non agressive (as the tone of the book is complementary to typography, positive light hearted tone). The type experiment that fits all these elements effectively is the second page sketch, as this takes a sans serif legible type by adds a manual imperfect feel via the decrotive nature.
FIRST DEVELOPMENTS-
As the context of the zine reflect all the artists different styles the cover design should take influence for these but also reflect my personal style. As i'm not included in the zine my artist representation will be via the layout as well as the cover design, this will be the typographical way to represent my personality as a designer as well as to show my work and influences on the zine.
background -
A large amount of the typographical work featured in the included decorative flourishes or aded detail around the text therefore this cover will mimic this feature, this will also allow the typography to add more colour and contrast the background effectively.
type -
-many of the piece in the zine as well as my own personal work include drop shadows or different over lapped layers, there this added to the cover, also added more detailed the to work.
a more 'digial' 70's computer typeface used to represent the digital nature
Overlapped different type added to reflect personal style whilst also added a playful less formal nature to the cover whilst allows the digital typeface to represent digital design more directly via the harsher lines than the orignal futura.
- A guide to type added to the top of the design, this is to add balance to to the bottom heavy design styles whilst framing the content and give purpose to the zine.
final design :) need to be screen printed
PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Final Responses
After sending out a new range of emails and instagram messages i've received a few more responses but still no where as many as i aim for, the final print deadline for the zine is Tuesday therefor in one last attempt to receive more feedback for the content i intent to send out quite a few more emails today.I've learnt for this brief that many emails and messages do get ignored therefore the more i send the greater the chance of reply.
Currently email have had larger response rate than instagram also many of the instagram artist have actually asked me to email them over the questions therefor this reflect that it's the artist preferred mode of communication too therefor should be used in future as to connect with intended professionals.
A range of artists have replied to my instagram messaged asking me to email over the question then have no responded to the email, this shows that even with the best intent due to time commitment artists won't and can't always reply to emails/messages. This has showed the importance of not relaying heavily on an artists to respond as even if they intent to they might not and not to take this personally.
final set of emails sent out -

PPP 2- STUDIO BRIEF 2 - Zine Cover Print Method Idea
Zine Cover Print Method Idea
A common feature of the responses i'm receiving for the zine around manual and digital typography is around the benefit of manual texture/finish. Many of the quotes discuss how they feel having something physically is better as well as the feel of the manual typography or the texture of the pieces are benefits of the medium, (Larry Stammers, Stephanie Wiehle, Irvan Ridwansyah ect) therefor this need to be reflected in the zine as to give a overall reflection of the responces. Manual Typography and manual production are elements that need to be included throughout in the final zine.
The zine needs to reflect the benefits of manual production but in a medium that can be mass produced so it can be applied to all the range of zine. The idea to do this is to screen print the cover desing, this design will be a typographical piece designed by myself to add my personal style/touch to the zine. Screenpriniting the cover will mimic the textures, and the benefits of manual discussed by the artists included in a typographically in a way that can be mass produced for the range of zines to be set off. This links the production of the zine to the zines content ratehr than just reflecting the digital aspect via the print technique, it added the more imperfect textured manual styles preferred by many of the contributors.
The main content of the zine will be digitally produced as it's currently 50 pages with detailed colours/layers which could not be screenprinited effectively therefore this element of the zine will reflect the benefits of digital production, the easy aswell as the professional perfect finish.

PPP- STUDIO BRIEF 1 -Project Report
Project Report - Bethany Fitton OUGD503
This module has been directed around live brief work,
the work has been done for clients and competitions. For studio brief 1 the
outcome produced took the form of a integrated digital social media campaign
for Orchard pig cider. This was chosen do the nature it explored areas of
advertising and promotional work I wanted to explore this year and in the
future. The brief was based around social media advertising and way to use soil
media to the best of their ability for the brand. This brief was probably the most successful
outcome for this module in my opinion this is due to the time planning aspect
of the brief. The brief planned out and asses for feedback at every point which
allowed the outcome to be the most effective for the tarte market as well as
fitting with the clients aims.
The group brief selected was the Greenall’s gin brief,
this was as to explore a very open brief. The client set the outcome as a ‘piece
of creativity’. This mean that the outcome could be anything, take any form of
art so I felt this was a good brief to collaborate with as I could push my
current practise by completing a piece that wasn’t just advertising or
graphically based. This group work was the hardest part of the module. This is
due to time planning issues in our group and external issues which mean certain
members of the group couldn’t be presence or wouldn’t response for most of the
brief . Fortunately, we managed to work around this issue via facetime and
other members of the group taking on more work but this was a setback. At the
end of the brief we manged to pull the submission together but this was very
last minute and caused stress for some of the group. As I’d finish my other work for the same
deadline I ended up doing more of the work I was happy with, this was so the
submission was finished if on it wouldn’t have been done. Working in a group
did have good side too it, it allowed me to realise the importance of communication
in group work as well as how to get feedback on ideas and combine style. The
final outcome is really effective for the brief and the research, group
discussion and other work we all contributed to this.
The small brief selected for this brief explored
digital aesthetically based design, flat design. This was this is an areas last
year I enjoyed. This would be work that could be included in y portfolio at the end of the brief as well as
would allowed me to get to better use with different software, an aim this year
was to get away from relaying on Photoshop and use illustrator to do more
illustrative work. The small brief allowed a rea of idea to be produce then a
range of visual experiment to be tested. This work was drastically different to
the other brief outcome as it was visually based rather than a conceptual idea
based campaigns these brief were singular flat outcomes. But even thought I
probably enjoyed these the most due to the design freedom and style that could
be tested and experimented with , after looking at the final outcomes as a
whole compared to the rest of the work outcome for this brief I’m least happy
with these. This is as I spent less time on these than the other brief due to
the size before felt they could have been explored more and the outcome could
have been more professional.

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Responsive, Studio brief 2, Evaluation
This part of the module was a group project, at the start of the brief I was excited but also anxious about working in part of a group. This was a I get very stressed about working being completed before deadline and hate leaving thing to the last minute. Throughout this brief I had to work on this control issue, we had to work on other people’s time scale rather than just mine. Time management was an issue in our group, and we did leave most of the work to the last minute and large amount of this was due to external issues for member of the group. As a group we tried to work around these issue and it meant that the other members of the group had to more work to make up for this. This showed how vital communication is in group work, and how technology can help with issues as we worked around these issues using facetime and messaging to get feedback from the group
The benefit of working in a group was the different skills of the different member, we tried to experiment with different areas but also allowed ourselves to do work personally as well. The final campaign shows the different we work we all made and due to this represents the group effort. It was very useful to work with an illustrator as they had skill I couldn’t do as well as knowledge into different aspect of design, even though the course are very similar subject areas the focus is around different aspect of the project.
This brief allowed exploring into how to work a group and how to work around issues out of my control but till to create an effective output that fits the clients brief. The final outcome of this brief created a set of work that showed how I can work with a group successfully for my portfolio. There were times I struggled in the group work but I’ve tired work around these and this show the important of communication, without constant communication about idea and meeting this project wouldn’t have been submitted
PPP- STUDIO BRIEF1 - Responsive, Studio brief 1, Evaluation
This brief was selected due to personal preferences to advertising and also how to use social medias a form of advertising, this is the subject of my next years works sot completing a project that explored this for this year was really helpful to understand what form of social advertising there are available and how these can be bent to fit the client aims.
Throughout the project the client aims and tone of voice was a major aspect of the design , this was as this is live brief the final outcome could be picked as the winner and use by the client. Also the aim was to find the most unique interesting way to use social media sites and personal knowledge of the target audience to explore ways of advertising which bent to the market preferences. This idea was build around using social platforms and the customer use of them as way to advertising and to connect with the target audience.
The development stage of this brief was the longest process as intended for the final outcome to be functional, i aimed to create a final idea that could visualize my idea to client. As the final product do actually work this made the whole project ore successful so in my opinion was worth the extra time taken. this also allowed content photos of the item to be taken so the client can see how the product will be interacted with by the user.
An issues with the outcome of the brief is that although it promoted the brand ons coal channel to the target audience there is only a little mention of the 'craft cider' aspect of the brand. The unique selling point was the pig rather than the craft cider element which the client highlighted as important this was due to the type effect the snapchat filter when surround the imager. In the professional world a designer or developer with more knowledge of the software and how it works would have found ways around this. Besides the focus not being on the craft cider aspect of the brief personally i'm really happy with the final outcome of this brief this is due it being a functional campaign feedback form he audience stated they would use.

PPP2- STUDIO BRIEF 1- Behance Update Responsive Work
After setting up a behance page earlier in the year this highlighted drastically that one of the areas i needed to work on way my professional presentation of work. For this module 503 5 different lives brief were entered, therefore a large body of work has been created for live client set and then sent to the client, a personal aim is that the final outcomes should be uploaded to behance as to give more content to my page/portfolio.
After creating the Behance page last time it was made clear that clients/professional/industry standard is for work to be presented in a professional manner. These brief have be created for live clients therefor professional presentation of the outcome was nesscessary, this is to allowed the client to visualize the outcome in use whilst reflecting more professional myself as a designer, this set a better tone of the work. The presentation of the work is as important as the work it's self.
'bad work can be presented well as good work and good work can be presented baldy as bad work'
After learning this from the behance initial page set up and research into other peoples pages n the site for these brief the final outcomes have all been mocked up (or as for the big personal brief i aimed to create a final outcome that worked effectively produced) professional photographed. Learning this from setting up the site has enhance my practise as its shown the importance of display to the professional world as well as shown an issue from my practise last year that i've aimed to resolve. The final outcomes imagery this has also allowed be to work more with the photography department in uni and learn more how to take/edit professional photographs which is as issue area.

The images now means that can uses this brief as content for my Behance page, this gives me a wide range of live client brief investigating into different mediums and areas of graphic design as my portfolio content reflecting my interests as a designer.
RESPONSIVE BRIEF CHOICE -
In the Responsive module i aimed to pick briefs that allowed me explore different aspects of the course along with different areas of interest, penguin book cover designs to explore purply visual responses to work on my design aesthetics and area i felt was lacking, Orhcard pig as to explore advertising and social media an area aimed to focus on next year, Greenall's Gin in brief as an typographical output woking with collabrotors for different courses with different skills. This wide exploration of different brief outcome/work is also as to give a widely open portfolio, as i'm not sure about which areas to focus on next years this will showcase my skills in the different areas of design.
