PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Skint Print Fair

skint print fair -

"Spent too much this December? Need some more art in your life after a grey January? The walls of your flat or house looking empty after arriving back for the new term? Need a different kind of gift for your Pisces friends?
Look no further,This January we are hosting a special kind of Print Fair at Leeds newest joint for craft beer, artisan food and good vibes - The Brunswick on North Street. Leeds "

this was a print fair run by the uni of leeds to raise money for their final exhaintiob show, the idea was that it was a print fair cheaper than anything online/available for students. This was run mostly by the facebook page and when i went seems really busy but the major issues was the sizes of the spaces available for the show, it was almost impossible to find and then even harder to move around in once we got there. The work its self was amazing but situated in a over crowed area which restricted access, also there wasn't a cash machine or much change available so i struggled to buy anything. Over all the experience taught me a lot about how to raise money for our final exhibition, facebook is a great advertiser, have a big space, make it easy to get to, pick a student cafe/somewhere students know, how change/ know where the nearest cash machine is.

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Mono Print Induction

Mono Print Induction

For the mono print workshop we where taught how to create mono print in the uni environment, this was useful as i had used this process before last year but the cleaning rota, set up and equipment is different here.  The uni workshop area is more organized than my studio last year because of the strict cleaning order and layout, it allows more work to be produced in a way that is more professional due to less mess around my designs/work.
The process if mono print is very simple and produces one of items that are different each time, MONO - print, its hard to create the same exactly print twice.

MAIN POINTS
cut out a stencil used to print with
don't contaminate ink
leave time from cleaning
unique
quick
manual
works different on different paper
takes longer to dry due to ink quality
ink clean us with oil, soapy water

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Book Binding Workshop

Booking Binding Workshop

For Design principles 403 i have to create 2 books, for this i will need to research, experiment and use different book binding method so today we had a workshop on 3 simple styles of book binding. The main idea i currently have for my first book is ring binding but this can be done with a plastic binder in the library so we didn't test this method.

(sorry for the low quality image this is a key area i need to work on, we have a photography lighting induction next week where i can learn how to take better images)

All 3 books i made in session

Saddle Stitch method
Youtube video on method if i forget - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWHkY5jOoqM

-opens at the middle
-thin binding method
-no much string shown
-easily openable
-full pages seen

Japanese Binding

-opens from the side
-decorative stitch
-adds detail
-adds interest to plain cover

Concertina/Accordion
youtube video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB42IbrwV34

 -folds out
-very big
-hard to read
-follows direction well
-interactive
-stands out
-grabs attention

This workshop has been very useful as now i know how to make each of these folds, i can use these in my books for 404 but also for any other personal work. Before this workshop i had no idea how to create a professional looking book now i have 3 different styles i can try. The first two style worked best in my opinion as these where less messy (didn't include glue) which gave a more finished professional looking book as i created less mistakes with them. The Japanese style stitch can be changed and created in different patterns  which adds detail to a simple cover, the saddle stitch is desecrate leaving the cover to be the focus also allows all the page to be seen, where as the concertina style might work best for a children book or a book that would only be read at home as very impractical as it follows out massively.

Saddle stitch seems very useful for the binding of the book for Studio Brief 2 for design principles as it will allow it to fit in to the record sleeve because its a very thin binding method.

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Sexist Advertising

sexist adverting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPGIljqjsdE

After the visit to the manchester gallery and the sexist advertising in the past, i saw this video that highlight the issues with the history of advertising. This linked to my ideas but in a worse way, it showed how women have been effected by advertising in the past and how women have been shown.
This really makes me think about my future because do i want to go into a industry that shows this? or is it morally wrong, its made me really think about if i could go into this field or if i would have to create design that would test my ethics. Can i have a soul and advertise? the world isn't just made of waterbottle adverts or easy graphics but may take a harder person than myself.

so more articles i looked at related to this issues -

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1/2 - Logo Illustrator Development

Logo Illustrator Development

For our self branding for studio brief 2 for PPP we have to create a logo that reflect and brands ourself, for this i first drew the sketches but then had to make digital experiments so i could have the logo as a vector. Digital logo files are more useful as vectors as the can be changed size, distorted ect without effecting the quality. For this style i wanted an hand rendered logo so i used a Wacom tablet and my macbook.

Learning illustrator is one of my aim for this year so this project was great chance to try and apply styles in the software,  i do really struggle with using it but the advice i have been given is to just work on it till i get used to it, i will pick it up better this way. I have forced myself to stop using photoshop as much as this isn't as professional, here are my experiment from illustrator with screen shots explain new feature i learn whilst using the software.

these are only experiments -

Experimentation with different brush styles

Experimentation with grided lines

anchor movements

I still prefer to work manually but this will be better for my practise and to my briefs

PPP- STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Art Only Instagram

One of my aims for PPP was to improve the way i show my work to the public, increase the amount of people who can see my work and processes, help me get noticed by more companies/studios whilst also receiving more general feedback on my work.
One of the ways i wanted to do this was to create an instagram page for my art work and my art, this would include all my processes, experiments, old work and final products. This is a very good way to use social media to my advantage as in this modern age may people would look on instagram for inspiration and also will allow me to show a wider audience my work.
I was really nervous about doing this as i didn't want to be judged by other people and have people see my work because i have very low confidence in my abilities as a graphic designs or a creative. After talking it out with my peers they said this might actually be a away to build my confidence in mu work, this again is another aim i want to achieve this year so i made a page under the name 'b.designss' ( it had to be spelt with an extra s because the other was taken)

i keep my bio simple yet direct, i want to explain i'm only a student and where i study, i wasn't sure if i should include my course title as i'm still unsure if i want to be classes as a graphic designer as i want to breach into advertising more/ other art fields. After create the account i followed many accounts of other artist and designer that will inspire me, my aim is to check this account for inspiration twice a day to see other artists art work but to also keep my account professional.

So far i have only included work for my foundation course as this is only work i feel is visually pleasing, i'm working on my confidence with work i create on my degree course but aim to constantly take photos of my sketch book/work throughout the next brief. My aim is to update atleast one a day to keep my account fresh and active to increase the chances i get noticed.

Here are some of the images included on my bold followed by simple caption explaining the work that don't take too long to explain incase they seem boring/excessive. I have also included hashtags at the end of my picture as this will create links to the images and increase viewers.

PPP - STUDIO BRIEF 1 - Manchester Money Talks

For our Studio Practise 406 Brief 2 today we visited a exhibition in manchester on money and art based around money, over all this exhibition was very strange as it included loads of different artist style related to the topic. This exhibition was a great example of how art can take any form even if its based around the same subject area. There was a mixture of photography, advertising, 3d word, graphic design ect but the pieces that stood out to me the most were the sexist old adverts about credit cards.
As i'm interested in advertising i found these amazing as they reflect the feelings toward women and their places clearly, they directly shows the worlds emotions towards women and how they showed be treated. One of my favourite things about advertising is how it can do this, it can show history in just a few pieces of designs because for this to exists there has to be purpose, it has to appeal to an audience or it wouldn't be successful.

Over all the piece from the exhibition presented women as stupid, money hungry human who are only good for shopping. The use of very attractive women on the adverts also shows how men who could afford a credit card would only be interested if it was sold to them by a pretty women, how the way to grab their attention was via sexual attraction. Although these adverts would be banned straight away these days it got me thinking about how much different has their been in the advertising world between now and then since this sex appeal is still a main factor in how to the industry sells to men examples.

are women being less or more exploited these days? how has advertising changed over the years yet still has a strong theme of sexism? how the quality and production of advertising may have improved but has the method?

PPP- STUDIO BREIF 2 - Stamp Research

Stamp Research -

An idea i had for this brief was to find a way to print onto recycled adverts ect so that my self branding could be applied to a textured back ground and handed out. This style would have 0 effect on the environment as it uses advertising/paper that would otherwise be wasted, this idea uses old piece of designs but adds my personal branding to them to help promote myself. This branding project needs to reflect my personal beliefs/morals, i recycle and care about recycling/saving the planet i want my self branding to reflect this idea.

The issues with idea was i wasn't sure how i could print onto existing design in a way that reflected me as i prefer manual print techniques over digital, also digital print uses fuel/electric to run the printers therefore would effect the econess of my work.

STAMP

Whilst visiting a club the other night on entry i got my hand stamped, this gave me an idea to use a stamp to apply my brand to reused paper. This idea would allow me to create my identity onto paper easily whilst not using any digital print methods/electricity. Stamps can be reused many time and once i create a stamp i could use one stamp to decorate anything i needed with my brand. I could use the stamp in any place to stamp any bit of paper i wanted easily and quickly. This could replace my business card as i could stamp either the hand, a leaflet, a receipt or anything available and give it to the client/customer/other designer but also cause no waste and be eco friendly.

This would a easy to use, fast, eco friendly, traditional print method, that could have very beautiful outcome.

LINKS to me - eco friendly, represent my love of traditional print, beautiful delicate outcome, imperfect every time, manual technique.

next step
look into ways to create a stamp
look into popular logo stamps
look into popular logo
experiment different stamp styles
