PPP - STUDIO BREIF 2 - More Development Sketches Logo

More Development Sketches Logo

As i'm still not happy with the outcome for my logo design i have gone back to creating the logo manual then will experiment using digital over the scans, this is as i work better this way as i find it freer as i have more control over the final outcome. I work better with lines i draw on paper rather than digital and although i'm trying to improve my skills on illustrator this takes time, i'm struggling to create a logo that a i like this way.  I can create sketches quickly anywhere to find a style of b that works as a b and is clear, the more i draw the more ideas i have to pick from.

since i now have a style i like this developments are more about perfecting the letter forms/shapes and making it work as a work, i have changed smaller aspects of each design to find one am over all happy with. Finding which letter forms work best, what combination of letter forms join better, how to make the Ss the same, the effect of different x heights, the effect of different kerning ext to find which one work best overall.

 More Digital Experiments

I have also then copied the scans into illustrator  and drawn on top of the design to create a digital version of the sketches, i found this harder to create an accurate sketches as the lines curve/change automatically so they fit together digitally where as by hand this doesn't happen.  Illustrator doesn't allow full control of the outcomes/curves/lines, but i have tried to create accurate copies of my hand drawn type.

benefits of illustrator -
copy drawn images easily
change sizes easily without having to redrawn
change colour easily
allows work to be drawn over images

downsides (for me) -
hard to use
Wacom tablet makes drawing different
hard to change lines
hard to change lines as a group
i prefer the manual look

Watercolour Experiments

As i want to represent myself as an over all creative/designer some typography is created using watercolour based paint, this give the type a more free flowing style that infers a more messy/imperfect form of design. The type seems more personal, more hand made compared to the digital edits of most manual type, this has bleed ect so its less perfect showing a more creative physical version of design, this style is one i want to reflect in my practise so i have created some sample logo ideas with this material.

Overall these were  harder to create than i expected, a paint brush doesn't work as precise as a pen/tablet and this cause the curves, lines and thickness to be slightly uncontrolled therefore messy which is something i aimed for. This effected the letter forms in a negative ways as i could make them as curly/free as i wanted and the thickness where very different, there was no contrast style that fitted for the whole logo as i couldn't get all the letter forms to look as they fitted  togethr therefore i wont take this style further.
